Belgian Grand Prix to Take Break in 2028 and 2030

Posted : 08 January 2025

The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps will take a brief hiatus from the Formula One calendar in 2028 and 2030, as part of a new contract extension that guarantees the race will be held in 2026, 2027, 2029, and 2031.

This announcement comes alongside confirmation of this year's race, scheduled for July 27, which will also feature a Saturday sprint event. The Belgian Grand Prix has been a staple of the F1 calendar, with Spa-Francorchamps being one of the sport's most historic and challenging tracks.

The decision to rotate the venue in certain years is part of a broader plan to introduce a 24-race format, with potential alternative venues in Europe yet to be confirmed for 2028 and 2030.

As Formula One adapts to this new rotation system, the futures of other European venues, such as Imola in Italy and the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain, remain uncertain. Additionally, Madrid is set to host a race from 2026 to 2035, and the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort will conclude after 2026.

Formula One is also exploring global expansion, with discussions around a potential return to Africa for the first time since 1993, with interest from both Rwanda and South Africa. The sport has indicated interest in further expansion in Asia as well.

The Belgian Grand Prix, part of F1 since the first season in 1950, has hosted numerous memorable moments at Spa, known for its scenic and challenging layout, including the iconic Eau Rouge/Raidillon section.
