Baciuska Takes Dakar Stage 2 Victory, Sanders Dominates Bike Category

Posted : 07 January 2025

Lithuanian driver Rokas Baciuska claimed victory in the second stage of the Dakar 2025 rally, the demanding '48-hour Chrono,' after an impressive recovery that moved him from fifth to first. Initially, Saudi driver Yazeed al-Rajhi was named the stage winner, but following a correction, Baciuska’s time of 10 hours, 54 minutes, and 11 seconds, which was 2 minutes and 43 seconds faster than Rajhi, earned him the top spot. The 967km special stage, which was spread over two days, presented a serious challenge due to its tough navigation and harsh terrain.

Al Rajhi, who finished second, described the stage as extremely difficult, particularly due to the divots and dust. He mentioned that navigating the stage felt like a multi-day event, requiring significant skill and endurance. Despite a 2-minute penalty for speeding, he managed to hold his position near the top. The long stage also involved bivouacking in the desert, with competitors not receiving assistance from their teams overnight, adding further complexity to the challenge.

Defending champion Carlos Sainz faced difficulties of his own, suffering significant damage to his Ford Raptor after rolling it on Sunday. Despite this setback, Sainz finished in third place, though he now sits in 26th overall in the standings.

Nine-time world rally champion Sebastien Loeb had a rough start due to an engine issue but made significant progress on Monday, finishing in seventh, 15 minutes and 51 seconds behind the leader. South African driver Henk Lategan currently leads the overall standings, with Baciuska moving into second and Rajhi in third.

In the bike category, Australian Daniel Sanders continued his dominance, claiming his third consecutive victory in the '48-hour Chrono,' following wins in the prologue and first stage. Sanders completed the stage in 11 hours, 12 minutes, and 13 seconds, 6 minutes and 45 seconds ahead of Frenchman Adrien van Beveren. Sanders now leads the provisional standings by 12 minutes and 36 seconds, aiming to become the second Australian to win the Dakar rally on a bike.
