Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli heads into the Miami Grand Prix as the youngest championship leader in Formula One history, aiming to secure a third consecutive victory after a month-long break in the season caused by global disruptions in the Middle East.
The 19-year-old Mercedes driver has made a stunning start to the season, winning in both China and Japan. His early dominance places him nine points ahead of teammate George Russell, who opened the campaign with victory in Australia. With major regulation updates and extensive car upgrades introduced in Miami, the race effectively marks a refreshed phase of the championship.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said the team had used the break to analyse early performances and address weaknesses. He warned that rival teams would also have improved during the pause, likely tightening competition as the season resumes.
Antonelli’s early success has placed him in rare company, becoming the first Italian driver since Alberto Ascari in 1953 to win back-to-back races. Ascari went on to complete a historic triple that season, a benchmark now loosely echoed in Antonelli’s current form.
The Miami weekend also introduces revised technical regulations aimed at improving racing quality, including changes to energy recovery systems and aerodynamic behaviour. Wolff described the updates as important for preserving Formula 1’s identity while enhancing the spectacle, noting that Mercedes expects to maintain competitiveness despite closer competition.
The circuit has previously seen success for multiple teams, including Red Bull and McLaren, with four-time world champion Max Verstappen aiming to recover form after a difficult start to the year. Meanwhile, McLaren arrive with significant upgrades and renewed optimism following strong performances in previous seasons.
Ferrari also enter Miami as serious contenders, with drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton positioned within striking distance of the leaders. Both teams have introduced heavily revised car packages, signalling an intensifying development battle across the grid.
The race also marks a milestone for Cadillac, who will make their first home appearance in the United States with drivers Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas joining the new project’s debut at the Hard Rock Stadium venue.
