Antonelli Secures Sprint Pole in Miami as Piastri Leads Practice

Posted : 03 May 2025

Kimi Antonelli claimed pole position for the Miami Grand Prix sprint race on Friday with an outstanding final lap in qualifying. The 18-year-old Mercedes driver clocked a blistering time of 1:26.482, securing the front spot ahead of McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, who finished second and third respectively.

Antonelli, who has shown impressive form throughout the weekend, expressed his excitement about earning his first pole and the opportunity to start Saturday’s race from the front row.

Antonelli’s rapid rise in Formula 1 continues to capture attention, especially after recently becoming the youngest driver to lead an F1 race — surpassing Max Verstappen’s 2016 record. His achievement is made even more remarkable given that he only obtained his driving license in January.

The rookie's performance in Miami underlines his growing confidence and skill, setting high expectations for the sprint and Sunday’s main event.

Earlier in the day, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri topped the charts during the only practice session, posting a fastest time of 1:27.18. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc followed closely behind, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen placing third.

The session ended prematurely when Haas driver Oliver Bearman spun and crashed into the barriers at turn 12, prompting a red flag and bringing practice to an early close.
