Antonelli Extends Title Lead as Russell Retires in Dramatic Canadian Grand Prix

Posted : 25 May 2026

The Canadian Grand Prix delivered a pivotal twist in the Formula 1 championship battle, as George Russell’s retirement handed Kimi Antonelli a crucial victory and a commanding lead in the standings.

What began as an intense on-track duel between the Mercedes teammates at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve ended in disappointment for Russell, whose race came to a halt after 30 laps of close and aggressive racing in damp and challenging conditions.

Antonelli, just 19, claimed his fourth consecutive win and now holds a significant 43-point advantage in the championship, strengthening his position as the title favourite despite many races still remaining.

Russell’s retirement stemmed from a suspected power unit failure while he was still firmly in the fight at the front. The Brit had been engaged in a thrilling battle with Antonelli, swapping positions multiple times and pushing each other to the limit in one of the season’s most entertaining duels.

The race itself was marked by unpredictable strategy calls, including an unusual decision by McLaren to start on slick tyres in wet conditions. However, it was the intra-team Mercedes fight that defined the Grand Prix, with both drivers briefly running first and second after overtaking McLaren’s Lando Norris.

At several points, the duel grew so close that team management intervened over the radio, warning both drivers to avoid contact after a series of near-misses, including a moment when Antonelli ran wide at the chicane following a lock-up.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff later admitted the battle was thrilling but potentially risky, noting that small mistakes could have resulted in a double retirement. He indicated that internal discussions would be held to assess how the situation was handled.

Russell, visibly frustrated after the race, reflected on a season that has seen multiple setbacks, including mechanical failures and unfortunate timing with safety cars. He suggested that fortune has consistently favoured his teammate in key moments.

Despite his disappointment, Russell maintained that he enjoyed the on-track battle, describing it as one of the most engaging he has had in years, comparing it to classic Formula 1 duels.

Antonelli, meanwhile, also praised the fight, calling it intense but enjoyable as he continued his impressive rise in his debut campaign.

Wolff, while acknowledging areas for improvement in team communication, backed Russell’s resilience and insisted the championship fight remains open mathematically, with 17 races still to come.
