Alpine is reportedly set to replace Jack Doohan with Franco Colapinto after just six races into the Formula 1 season. The Australian’s position had been under scrutiny since Colapinto was signed from Williams over the winter break. Although Alpine has not officially confirmed the move, sources indicate that the change could be finalized before the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola, scheduled for 16–18 May. Despite recent progress—such as out-qualifying teammate Pierre Gasly in Miami—Doohan’s inconsistency and crashes have contributed to the decision.
Doohan has shown glimpses of speed but has struggled with several incidents that have compromised his campaign. At the season opener in Australia, he crashed on the first lap in wet conditions, severely damaging his car. Another major crash occurred during practice at the Japanese Grand Prix after he failed to deactivate his DRS before entering Turn One. These setbacks have raised concerns within Alpine about his reliability under pressure, despite his evident potential.
Meanwhile, Colapinto's path to a full-time F1 seat has been aided by financial backing from Latin American sponsors. The Argentine made nine starts for Williams last year after Logan Sargeant was dropped, scoring points in Azerbaijan and the United States. However, he also attracted criticism for significant crashes, particularly during the Sao Paulo Grand Prix and again in qualifying at Las Vegas. Nonetheless, his performances in other races have suggested promise, enough for Alpine to consider him a long-term option.
The move to bring in Colapinto was speculated from the moment he joined Alpine’s ranks, and his prior experience has made the transition more feasible. While Williams retains an option to reclaim Colapinto in the future, Alpine appears ready to test him in a race seat. As for Doohan, despite losing his spot, he is expected to remain within the Alpine setup, potentially in a reserve or development role as the team assesses its long-term driver strategy.
