Alex Palou Clinches Sixth Win of IndyCar Season with Gritty Fuel-Saving Victory

Posted : 23 June 2025

Alex Palou continued his dominant IndyCar season with a hard-fought win at Sunday’s Grand Prix at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The Spanish driver held off a late charge from Sweden’s Felix Rosenqvist to secure his sixth victory in just nine starts, cementing his position at the top of the championship standings.

Palou, who last triumphed at the Indianapolis 500, overcame early setbacks and executed a near-flawless fuel-saving strategy to prevail on the 4.014-mile, 14-turn road course.

The race was full of drama, featuring four caution flags in the first 23 laps that forced teams into varied strategic decisions. Early leader Scott Dixon from New Zealand took advantage after lap 28, only for American Josef Newgarden to crash out from second place, opening a window for Palou to move up the field.

From there, a tense final stretch saw the top contenders battling not just each other, but their fuel gauges. With Rosenqvist running on a full tank, the pressure mounted on Palou, Dixon, and Alexander Rossi to make it to the finish line.

As the final laps approached, strategy dictated the outcome. Rossi pitted with four laps to go and Dixon followed a lap later, leaving Palou to hold his lead on dwindling fuel. Despite the looming threat of Rosenqvist, who was just two seconds behind, Palou maintained his composure and crossed the finish line first.

American Santino Ferrucci claimed third place, though his car ran out of fuel just one turn after the race ended. "It was a crazy race," Palou admitted. "We lost positions, gained them back—it was tough for everybody."

With the victory, Palou became the first driver since A.J. Foyt in 1975 to win six of the first nine races in an IndyCar season. He now leads the championship with 386 points, 93 ahead of Kyle Kirkwood. Palou’s win also ties him with legends Mario Andretti, Michael Andretti, and Emerson Fittipaldi for the most wins (three) at Road America. As he chases his fourth championship in five years, Palou's ability to combine speed, intelligence, and endurance continues to define him as the sport’s most formidable competitor.
