Alex Marquez Edges Brother Marc in Buriram Practice as MotoGP Season Kicks Off

Posted : 28 February 2025

Marc Marquez had a strong start to the first race weekend of the MotoGP season in Buriram, Thailand, but was ultimately outshone by his younger brother, Alex Marquez, during Friday’s practice sessions. The six-time world champion, who recently joined Ducati’s factory team alongside Francesco Bagnaia, set the fastest time in the morning practice despite scorching temperatures.

However, in the afternoon session, Alex delivered a blistering lap of one minute and 29.020 seconds, edging out Marc by just 0.052 seconds to claim the top spot.

While Marc remained competitive, his Ducati teammate Bagnaia had a difficult day on the track. The Italian struggled to find his rhythm, finishing 10th in the first practice and dropping to 13th in the second.

His frustration was evident when Franco Morbidelli, who placed fifth, inadvertently blocked his path during a flying lap attempt.

Meanwhile, Spain’s Pedro Acosta put in an impressive performance for KTM, securing the third-fastest time of the day. The action is set to continue with a 13-lap sprint race on Saturday, leading up to the main event on Sunday.

Much of the season’s anticipation has centered around Marc Marquez and Bagnaia’s partnership at Ducati, with many hailing them as a dream team.

However, some analysts have warned that the combination of two elite riders with aggressive racing styles could lead to tensions over the course of the grueling 22-race season.

Marquez has shown promising form on his new bike after making the switch from Honda and is widely considered a strong contender for his first world title since 2019.

The start of the season has been overshadowed by the absence of reigning world champion Jorge Martin, who suffered multiple injuries in pre-season testing. The Spaniard fractured his right hand and left foot in a crash during practice in Malaysia, only to sustain further injuries in a separate training accident.

His Aprilia team confirmed he required additional surgery and will be forced to miss both the Buriram race and the upcoming Argentine Grand Prix in mid-March.
