Alex Marquez claimed an impressive victory at the Catalunya MotoGP on Sunday, ending his brother Marc Marquez’s run of seven consecutive wins. The 29-year-old held firm on home soil, crossing the line 1.740 seconds ahead of the championship leader.
The result means Marc Marquez, who leads the overall standings with 487 points, will have to wait before sealing his seventh world title. Alex, riding for Gresini Ducati, trails by 182 points but celebrated his second win of the season and of his MotoGP career. Enea Bastianini completed the podium, finishing 5.562 seconds adrift on his KTM.
For Alex, the victory was a form of redemption after crashing out from the lead in Saturday’s Sprint. “Today I had to pull that thorn out,” he said. “It was a race of self-control. I had more to give, but I didn’t want to destroy the tyres.”
Marc Marquez, though unable to clinch the title early, was satisfied with second place. “I gave everything. I led in the opening laps, but in the end I was on the limit,” he said. “I’m happy for Alex, for Ducati, and also for myself, because on a difficult circuit I managed to come second.”
The race saw Marc take the early lead into Turn 1 before Alex struck back on lap four, retaking control and steadily widening the gap. Both brothers comfortably distanced themselves from the rest of the field, with Marc finishing more than four seconds ahead of third-placed Bastianini.
The home crowd at Montmeló erupted as the Marquez brothers celebrated together, turning the event into a family triumph. Marc’s first chance to seal the championship will now come at the Japanese Grand Prix on September 28.
Elsewhere, Francesco Bagnaia showed resilience after starting 21st on the grid — his worst qualifying result since 2022 — and fought back to finish seventh, offering a boost to his confidence.
