Alex Dunne Set to Make Irish History with F1 Practice Debut at Austrian Grand Prix

Alex Dunne is poised to make history this weekend as the first Irish driver in 22 years to participate in a Formula 1 race weekend. The 19-year-old will step in for McLaren’s Lando Norris during the first practice session of the Austrian Grand Prix, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning racing career. His debut comes as part of Formula 1’s requirement for teams to give young or rookie drivers practice time during the season.

 

Dunne, currently leading the Formula 2 championship in his debut year, has already claimed victories in Bahrain and Imola, and earned pole position in Monaco before a crash and penalty affected his race.

 

Despite setbacks, he showed resilience with a strong comeback drive from 19th to second in Barcelona. His form and consistency have made him one of the sport's most talked-about prospects, especially after his recent testing opportunities in older F1 machinery at Zandvoort and Austin.

 

Reflecting on his upcoming debut, Dunne expressed excitement and gratitude for the chance to drive McLaren’s MCL39. “It’s an amazing opportunity to be able to drive during FP1 in Austria,” he said. “I’ve been preparing well through previous car testing and simulator sessions, and I’m looking forward to supporting the team this weekend.” He will juggle his Formula 2 commitments with Rodin Motorsport while making his F1 debut at the Red Bull Ring.

 

Dunne follows in the footsteps of Ralph Firman, who last represented Ireland in F1 during the 2003 season. Before Firman, Eddie Irvine was the most notable Irish-born driver, racing under a UK licence for Ferrari and Jaguar. With his F1 practice session scheduled for 12:30 BST on Friday, Dunne stands on the brink of becoming a new Irish icon in motorsport.
