Alex Albon Extends Williams Stay Through 2027 Formula 1 Season

Posted : 18 August 2026

Alex Albon will remain with Williams for the 2027 Formula 1 season after the team confirmed an extension of his contract. The agreement keeps the British-born Thai driver at Williams for a sixth consecutive campaign.

Albon joined Williams in 2022 after his spell with Red Bull and has since become a central figure in the team's rebuilding project. He recently reached 100 Grand Prix starts for Williams, surpassing Nigel Mansell's previous record for the most race starts with the team.

The decision comes during a difficult 2026 campaign for Williams. After finishing fifth in the constructors' championship last year, the team has struggled under the new regulations and currently sits ninth among 11 teams after 11 races, with 11 points.

Despite the downturn, Albon remains convinced that Williams can recover. He said the team's transformation since his arrival has been significant and described the current difficulties as additional motivation to continue working with the factory and supporters to move the team back toward the front of the grid.

Team principal James Vowles also welcomed the continuation of the partnership, highlighting Albon's leadership throughout Williams' transformation. Vowles believes the driver remains an important part of the team's plans and said there is still substantial unfinished business to address.

Albon's new commitment also provides him with some flexibility amid an uncertain driver market. Williams teammate Carlos Sainz has yet to secure his future beyond 2026, leaving one of the team's seats potentially open for next season.

The extension was announced ahead of this weekend's Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, as Formula 1 prepares to return from its summer break. Albon will now focus on helping Williams recover from its disappointing 2026 campaign and make the improvements the team believes are possible under its long-term rebuilding programme.
