After a successful career in MotoGP, Aleix Espargaro has made the transition from motor racing to cycling. Following the conclusion of the 2024 MotoGP season, the 35-year-old Spanish rider retired from his two-wheel career, having secured three race wins and accumulated 255 starts. Espargaro has now joined the Lidl-Trek cycling team, where he will take on an ambassadorial role starting in 2025, while still remaining involved in the MotoGP world by assisting the HCR team with their testing processes.
Espargaro’s move into cycling is a significant shift, but one that reflects his long-standing passion for the sport. He expressed his excitement about joining Lidl-Trek, a team known for its roster of elite cyclists. "I’m thrilled to join the Lidl-Trek family, which is home to some of the world’s best cyclists," Espargaro shared in a statement. "I’m excited to learn from some of the best cyclists and staff in the sport, push my limits, and share this special journey with fans."

Cycling had always been a personal passion for Espargaro, and he feels that his transition comes at the right time. "Cycling has been a passion of mine for years, and I decided to step away from MotoGP earlier than planned to join a program which aligns so well with my passion," he explained. Espargaro is deeply grateful to Lidl-Trek for welcoming him and supporting him in this new chapter of his sporting career.
Despite retiring from active racing, Espargaro will remain connected to MotoGP through his role with HCR. He will contribute to the team’s testing activities, continuing his involvement in the world of motor racing while pursuing his new cycling venture. "I’ll give it everything I have," he added, reaffirming his commitment to his new role with Lidl-Trek.
Espargaro’s transition into the world of professional cycling will also offer him the opportunity to work alongside some of the sport’s most talented athletes and staff. As part of his ambassadorial role, he is expected to participate in some of cycling’s most prestigious events. His extensive experience in top-level competition, coupled with his passion for the sport, makes him an asset to Lidl-Trek.
Luca Guercilena, Lidl-Trek’s general manager, spoke highly of Espargaro’s addition to the team. "Working with Aleix will be incredibly rewarding for us, and especially for our young riders," he said. "We know he is a strong, passionate cyclist, but he also brings different experiences and perspectives to the team." Guercilena highlighted that Espargaro’s presence would provide valuable guidance to the team’s younger athletes as they navigate the pressures of elite competition.
Espargaro’s decision to step away from MotoGP and pursue his passion for cycling marks a new and exciting chapter in his career. As he embarks on this journey with Lidl-Trek, he is eager to continue pushing his limits, sharing his journey with fans, and contributing to the success of the cycling team.
