Albon Set for Pit-Lane Start After Williams Makes Sprint Setup Changes

Posted : 04 July 2026

Williams driver Alex Albon will start the British Grand Prix Sprint from the pit lane after the team made changes to his car that breached Formula 1's parc fermé regulations.

Albon had originally qualified 16th for the Sprint at Silverstone. However, Williams opted to modify the suspension setup on his FW48 after Sprint Qualifying, forcing the team to accept a pit-lane start as the penalty.

Under Formula 1 regulations, cars enter parc fermé before Sprint Qualifying and cannot undergo performance-related setup changes until after the Sprint race. Any alterations outside the permitted work result in the driver losing their grid position and starting from the pit lane.

The decision means Albon will no longer line up on the starting grid for the 100-kilometre Sprint. Instead, he will join the race from the pit lane once the field has passed the pit exit after the start.

With Albon removed from the grid, the remaining drivers each gain one position before the lights go out at Silverstone. The adjustment leaves 21 cars on the starting grid, with Albon joining the race separately from the pit lane.

Williams chose to prioritise improving the handling and balance of the car rather than preserving Albon's original starting position. The team will hope the revised setup gives the Thai driver a better opportunity to recover places during the Sprint and collect valuable data ahead of qualifying for Sunday's British Grand Prix.

Sprint races have become increasingly important in Formula 1 weekends, offering teams an opportunity to evaluate race pace while competing for championship points. Although Albon's chances of scoring will now be more difficult, the revised setup could provide useful information for the remainder of the weekend.

Williams has shown improved competitiveness throughout the 2026 season and will be aiming to maximise its performance despite the setback. Albon's challenge will be to fight through the field and build momentum before the main qualifying session and Sunday's Grand Prix.
