Formula 1 design legend Adrian Newey is set to take over as Aston Martin’s team principal next year as part of a major restructure at the team.
Andy Cowell, who has held the role of team principal and CEO for just over a year, will step aside to become chief strategy officer, focusing on the team’s engine partnership with Honda and fuel suppliers.
Aston Martin stated that the reshuffle allows both Newey and Cowell to concentrate on their respective strengths, enhancing overall organisational efficiency.
Newey, who joined Aston Martin in March as managing technical partner on a five-year deal reportedly worth up to £30 million annually with bonuses, will now lead the technical team, including trackside operations.
Cowell’s move comes after reported disagreements over the running of the team and the design of the 2026 car. Team owner Lawrence Stroll praised Cowell’s leadership and emphasized that the change is mutual and in the best interest of Aston Martin.
Newey expressed enthusiasm about taking on the expanded role, highlighting the talent within the team and the challenges ahead with Aston Martin now a full works team under new regulations in 2026.
Cowell noted that having laid the foundations, it was the right time to transition to a strategic role. Newey’s appointment makes him Aston Martin’s fourth team principal in four years, following Otmar Szafnauer, Mike Krack, and Cowell.
