2026 F1 Italian Grand Prix: Monza Set for a Pivotal Championship Battle

Formula 1 heads to the iconic Monza circuit this weekend for the 2026 Italian Grand Prix, scheduled for September 4-6. The race will be the 13th round of the championship and begins a demanding run of races, with the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid following a week later.

Known as the “Temple of Speed,” Monza is one of F1’s most historic circuits and has hosted championship races since 1950. The 5.793-kilometre track is famous for its long straights, heavy braking zones and fast corners, making straight-line speed and aerodynamic efficiency especially important.

The championship arrives in Italy with Kimi Antonelli holding a 59-point advantage over Mercedes teammate George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton. However, the championship leader faces a major setback at his home race after Mercedes confirmed a power-unit change that will leave him starting from the back of the grid.

Antonelli’s penalty could dramatically alter the battle at the front. Lando Norris, who has won the past two races in Hungary and the Netherlands, will aim to extend his winning streak, while Russell and Hamilton will see an opportunity to close the gap in the standings.

Ferrari will be under enormous pressure in front of the passionate Tifosi. Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are expected to receive new engines without grid penalties, while Ferrari will also run a special livery inspired by its 1996 design as part of a tribute to the legacy of Michael Schumacher.

Defending race winner Max Verstappen will also be one of the leading contenders. Red Bull’s power-unit performance could prove valuable around Monza, where the ability to generate strong speed down the circuit’s lengthy straights is crucial.

The Italian Grand Prix will follow the traditional three-day format, beginning with two practice sessions on Friday. Final practice and qualifying take place on Saturday, before the 53-lap race gets underway on Sunday afternoon.
