Zambian goalkeeper retires, Enyeama's record intact
Posted : 13 July 2023
Vincent Enyeama's impressive record as a goalscoring goalkeeper remains untouched as Kennedy Mweene, the Zambian goalkeeper, announces his retirement from football after a remarkable 20-year career.
At 38 years old, Mweene, who played for Mamelodi Sundowns and the Zambian national team, bids farewell to the sport, leaving behind a legacy of achievements.
Although falling just short of Enyeama's record, Mweene departs as the second-highest-scoring African goalkeeper.
During his time with Mamelodi Sundowns, Mweene enjoyed considerable success, winning numerous trophies including eight Premier Soccer League titles, two Nedbank Cups, two Telkom Knockout titles, the prestigious CAF Champions League, and the illustrious CAF Super Cup.
On the international stage, Mweene played a pivotal role in Zambia's historic victory at the 2012 African Cup of Nations, a moment that will forever hold a special place in the hearts of his compatriots.
Notably, Mweene's impact extended beyond his goalkeeping skills, as he became known for his penalty-taking abilities.
Both the Zambian national team and Free State Stars entrusted him with spot-kick duties, resulting in an impressive tally of 13 career goals.
However, it is Vincent Enyeama, the charismatic and dependable former Lille goalkeeper, who reigns supreme as Africa's premier goalscoring goalkeeper.
Enyeama found the back of the net on 20 occasions throughout his career, with ten goals scored during his time with Enyimba and eight while playing for Hapoel Tel Aviv.
Enyeama's achievements include three Nigerian Premier League titles, two CAF Champions League triumphs, two Israeli Premier League victories, and two Israel State Cup conquests.
Recognized for his contributions, he was awarded the prestigious Prix Marc-Vivien Foé and was recently crowned the Greatest African Goalkeeper of all Time by IFFHS.
Enyeama's crowning glory arrived in 2013 when he played a pivotal role in Nigeria's Africa Cup of Nations victory, earning a well-deserved place in the Team of the Tournament.
His remarkable contributions solidified his status as one of the most revered African goalkeepers of all time, both in his era and in the history of the sport.
