Yobo obtains court order against Turkish firm and directors

Posted : 29 November 2023

Joseph Yobo, former captain of the Nigerian Super Eagles, has obtained an interim court order against Aziz Yildirim, the former president of Turkish sports club Fenerbahce SK, Turkish company Dearsan Corporations, its Director Murat Gordi, and the Nigerian Navy for an alleged breach of contract.

The order, granted by Justice Hamza Muazu of the High Court in Abuja, prohibits the Nigerian Navy and the Chief of Naval Staff from making further payments to Dearsan Corporations, Aziz Yildirim, and Murat Gordi, except for 10 percent of the payment into the court-nominated Escrow account, pending the resolution of the lawsuit filed by Yobo.

Yobo's legal action claims entitlement to a commission for introducing Dearsan Corporation to the Nigerian market and facilitating business relations with the Nigerian Navy, resulting in multi-billion naira contracts for the Turkish company.

The dispute arises from Dearsan's failure to compensate Yobo for his role in facilitating their entry into the Nigerian market and subsequent business success with the Nigerian Navy. Yobo asserts his right to not less than 10 percent of any amounts received for dealings with the Nigerian Navy.

Yobo's legal team, led by Chief Bolaji Ayorinde (SAN), seeks a declaration of entitlement to the commission and an order compelling the defendants to produce a sworn statement on all amounts paid and recovered.

Despite the court order, the Nigerian Navy and Chief of Naval Staff have not confirmed compliance, potentially leading to contempt charges. The case's impact includes damage to Dearsan's corporate image in Nigeria and potential loss of future contracts due to failure to honor contractual obligations.
