Stage 11 of the Vuelta a España concluded without an official winner on Wednesday after race officials were forced to neutralise the finish due to protest disruptions in Bilbao. The decision came when demonstrators blocked the planned finish line, prompting organisers to stop the race three kilometres from the end.
Race director Javier Guillén confirmed via Radio Vuelta that times would be recorded at the three-kilometre mark. He explained that mountain classification and intermediate sprint points would still be awarded, but no stage winner would be declared at the finish.
The 157.4km route, which both started and ended in Bilbao, had reached its final stretch when the disruption occurred. General classification contenders were still battling for position, with race leader Jonas Vingegaard (Visma–Lease a Bike) and Britain’s Tom Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) managing to distance themselves before the stage was cut short.
Concerns about rider safety had already been raised earlier in the week. The Professional Cyclists’ Association (CPA) had appealed for tighter security at the Vuelta following several protest-related incidents, with the Israel–Premier Tech team appearing to be the main focus of demonstrations.
