Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has sparked speculation about his future with the Super Eagles following an Instagram post on June 6, 2025, where he seemed to announce his retirement from international football. The forward, who plays for Bayer Leverkusen, expressed his pride in representing Nigeria, but his cryptic message left many questioning his commitment to the national team.
Boniface took to social media, writing, “Proud to play for my country and a dream for me. Really enjoyed every moment, the good and the bad. Thanks a lot. Thank you all. I don hang boot.” The Nigerian Pidgin phrase "I don hang boot," which translates to "I have retired," led many to believe the striker was calling time on his international career.
However, shortly after the post went viral, Boniface deleted it and shared a meme, suggesting that the earlier message was made in jest. This has left fans and analysts in limbo, uncertain about whether he truly intends to retire or was merely having fun.
The 24-year-old made his debut for the Super Eagles in September 2023, but he has struggled to find the back of the net in 13 appearances. His most recent match was a 1–1 draw against Russia in a friendly on June 6, where Boniface played for 61 minutes before being substituted for Tolu Arokodare, who later scored the equalizer.
While Boniface has struggled on the international stage, his club form at Bayer Leverkusen has been impressive. This contrast between his performances at the club level and with the national team has led to debates about his future with the Super Eagles.
At present, the forward has not officially announced any decision regarding his retirement, leaving the football world waiting for clarification on his Super Eagles status.
