United's bid for Chelsea's Mason Mount gets rejected

Manchester United's £40m bid for Chelsea's Mason Mount has been rejected. United manager Erik ten Hag sees Mount as a valuable addition to their attacking options.
However, United believes that Chelsea's valuation of £70m is too high, especially considering Mount's one-year remaining contract. United is expected to make another offer for the midfielder but is mindful of their overall transfer budget.
The likelihood of United signing Tottenham's Harry Kane for £100m is also deemed highly unlikely due to budget constraints. Ten Hag is focused on acquiring a new striker but is interested in Mount's versatility in advanced positions.
Mount, who came through Chelsea's academy, has had loan spells at Vitesse Arnhem and Derby County before making his first-team debut. Although he played a significant role in Chelsea's Champions League triumph, his Premier League starts decreased to 20 in the 2022-23 season.
Contract talks between Chelsea and Mount have been ongoing, but the club needs to sell players to address Financial Fair Play concerns after spending £600m in the past two transfer windows. Mount, who made his senior England debut in 2019, has scored five goals in 36 caps for his national team.
