UEFA Set to End FIFA Boycott Threat Ahead of Champions League Draw

The dispute between UEFA and FIFA has cast a shadow over Thursday’s Champions League league-phase draw, with European football’s governing body expected to withdraw its threat to boycott FIFA competitions. The development follows assurances that FIFA will not revive plans to bring private investment into major tournaments.

The disagreement began after FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s administration proposed the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a commercial structure that could have allowed private investors to acquire stakes in a company overseeing major FIFA events, including the World Cup and Club World Cup.

UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin strongly opposed the proposal, with European football’s governing body previously warning that its national teams would not participate in FIFA competitions while the plans remained active. UEFA subsequently sought firm guarantees that similar attempts to introduce private ownership into the sport would not be repeated.

Those assurances now appear to have been secured. UEFA is expected to formally drop its boycott threat at a meeting in Monaco, allowing European teams to participate in upcoming FIFA competitions, including next month’s Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland. However, UEFA’s wider opposition to Infantino’s leadership remains unchanged.

The dispute has therefore not completely disappeared, but the immediate threat of European teams being absent from FIFA tournaments has eased. Italy has also withdrawn its support for Infantino’s re-election, while UEFA and other confederations continue to push for governance reforms.

Attention will now turn back to the club game as the 2026/27 Champions League league-phase draw takes place on Thursday. The competition features 36 clubs, with each team scheduled to face eight different opponents under the league-phase format introduced two seasons ago.

Paris Saint-Germain enter the campaign aiming to become the first club in the modern era to win three consecutive European titles since Real Madrid achieved the feat between 2016 and 2018. PSG successfully defended their crown last season after defeating Arsenal in the final in Budapest.

The French champions will be joined by Europe's leading clubs, with England providing five representatives: Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Aston Villa. Spain also has five teams in the competition, while Italian newcomers Como and Azerbaijani debutants Sabah are among the less familiar names in the 36-team field.

The league phase is scheduled to begin from September 8, with the final matchday taking place on January 27, 2027. The tournament will conclude at Madrid's Estadio Metropolitano on June 5, 2027.
