UCI bans transgender women from female events

Posted : 15 July 2023
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), world cycling's governing body, has decided to prevent transgender women from competing in female events to protect the fairness of female competition.

This decision comes after a similar move by British Cycling. Transgender women who transitioned after male puberty will now compete in a new category called 'men/open', while anyone who does not meet the conditions for participation in women's events will be admitted without restriction.

Previously, transgender women could compete in elite female events if they met testosterone-based regulations.

However, the UCI has now reconsidered based on scientific knowledge, which indicates that hormone therapy does not completely eliminate the benefits of testosterone received during male puberty.

As a precautionary measure, the UCI is taking action to ensure equal opportunities for all competitors.

The UCI's new rules will apply to events on the international calendar, including the Women's World Tour, World Championships, and World Cups across various cycling disciplines. The decision has been praised by some, including Olympic gold medalist Nicole Cook, who believes it will ensure fair competition for female athletes.

However, not everyone is pleased with the ruling. Transgender cyclist Emily Bridges expressed disappointment, stating that the decision means competitive sport is no longer open to transgender individuals.

She vowed to continue fighting against the ruling in sports labs, courtrooms, and on the streets. The UCI acknowledged that rules might change in the future as scientific knowledge evolves.
