Tour De France Femmes 2023: Danny Stam criticize Demi Vollering's penalty, causing her to drop from second to seventh
Posted : 28 July 2023
SD Worx's Danny Stam strongly criticized the UCI race jury's decision to penalize Demi Vollering retrospectively for drafting during Stage 5 of the Tour de France Femmes.
Vollering received a 20-second penalty and dropped from second to seventh on the general classification. Stam expressed his frustration, stating that the penalty was "totally ridiculous" and did not fit the situation.
Vollering suffered a puncture during the stage and received a tow from the team car to catch up to the peloton. However, the UCI deemed this maneuver inappropriate and imposed the penalty and a fine. Stam argued that the penalty could have a significant impact on the race's outcome and questioned the decision-making process of the UCI.
Former Dutch cyclist Iris Slappendel also criticized the move, calling it "very dangerous." She emphasized the importance of respecting the rules of the road in the convoy to ensure the safety of riders, sport directors, and those on motorbikes.
The penalty has put Vollering at a disadvantage, now trailing her rival Annemiek van Vleuten by 12 seconds. Stam and the team believe that such decisions can have a major influence on the final results and called for a review of such rulings in top-level sports.
Overall, the incident sparked controversy and raised concerns about the fairness and impact of penalties in the competitive race.
