Tottenham Suffer Major Blow as Captain Cristian Romero Ruled Out for Season

Posted : 13 April 2026

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a major setback after captain Cristian Romero was ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a serious knee injury sustained in their 1-0 defeat to Sunderland.

The Argentina international was forced off during the Premier League clash at the Stadium of Light after a collision involving goalkeeper Antonín Kinsky. Romero appeared visibly distressed as he left the pitch and was later seen in tears, raising immediate concerns about the severity of the injury.

Medical assessments have since confirmed that the 27-year-old defender has suffered a high-grade partial tear of his medial cruciate ligament. The injury is expected to sideline him for up to eight weeks, effectively ending his involvement in Tottenham’s final six matches of the season.

Romero’s absence is a significant blow for the club as they continue their battle to avoid relegation, with Spurs currently sitting in 18th place and just two points from safety. His leadership and defensive presence have been central to the team, making his loss especially damaging during a critical stage of the campaign.

The injury also casts doubt over Romero’s availability for Argentina’s upcoming international commitments, including this summer’s World Cup, where he is expected to play a key role in their title defence.

Tottenham’s newly appointed head coach Roberto De Zerbi has described Romero as a “crucial player” and admitted the defender’s absence will be deeply felt as the team fights to secure Premier League survival.
