Tonda Eckert Escapes Immediate Ban Over Southampton ‘Spygate’ Scandal

Posted : 08 October 2026

Southampton manager Tonda Eckert has avoided an immediate touchline ban after the Football Association sanctioned him for his involvement in the club’s “Spygate” controversy. The 33-year-old was handed a six-week suspension, but the punishment has been suspended until the end of the 2027/28 season, allowing him to remain in charge.

Eckert also received a £28,000 fine and a formal reprimand after admitting three breaches of FA Rule E3.1. The charges concerned the authorisation or direction of observations of training sessions belonging to Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough before Southampton fixtures.

The suspended ban will only be activated if Eckert is found to commit another breach involving the requesting, authorising, obtaining or using information from observations of another club’s training. He is therefore free to continue managing Southampton, including Sunday's meeting with Portsmouth.

Southampton had already faced significant consequences over the wider scandal. The club was removed from last season's Championship play-offs and began the current campaign with a four-point deduction after admitting breaches of EFL regulations.

Eckert accepted responsibility for his actions and admitted the FA charges. The independent commission considered his remorse and cooperation as important mitigating factors when determining the final punishment.

Southampton welcomed the decision, saying it should bring an end to a difficult chapter for the club. The Saints also said they had introduced measures designed to prevent similar errors of judgement from happening again.

Owner Dragan Solak said the club had already endured significant punishment and expressed confidence that Eckert had learned from the episode. He added that the suspended sanction allows the German coach to continue his work with the team.

Eckert took permanent charge of Southampton in December 2025 and helped guide the club to fourth place in the Championship last season, although their play-off expulsion prevented them from competing for promotion. Southampton currently sit 13th in the division.
