Three Arrested in Spain for Racist Abuse of Barcelona Players in Clasico

Posted : 23 November 2024

Three football fans were arrested in Spain for racially abusing Barcelona players Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde during last month's Clasico against Real Madrid.

According to Spanish police, two adults and a minor are accused of making xenophobic remarks that violated the dignity and moral integrity of the young players.

The arrests were made after investigators identified the suspects using mobile phone and television footage from the match, which Barcelona won decisively with a 4-0 scoreline.

The incident gained widespread attention after videos surfaced on social media, showing racial abuse aimed at the Barcelona players, particularly 17-year-old Lamine Yamal.

The young Spain international became the youngest scorer in Clasico history during the game and faced abuse while celebrating his milestone goal. This case underscores the ongoing struggle within Spanish football to address the pervasive issue of racism in stadiums.

Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior has become a prominent voice against racism in Spanish football, having endured repeated abuse since joining La Liga in 2018. The Brazilian winger received global support after confronting Valencia supporters in May 2023 over racist behaviour, leading to the sentencing of three fans to eight months in prison.

Earlier that year, an effigy of Vinicius in a Real Madrid jersey was discovered hanging from a bridge near the club's training ground, further highlighting the deep-rooted problem that continues to tarnish Spanish football.
