Team Edo has emerged winners of the 2023 Women’s Rugby Tournament in Asaba, Delta State.
Africa Sport Network (ASN) reports that the Coach Williams Ntiense-tutored Team Edo won the tournament in grand style as they stayed unbeaten and without loosing a point throughout the entire tournament which lasted with six games of the inaugural women's Rugby Championship.
Enroute to winning the 12-team tournament, Team Edo beat Imo Pyramids, Abia Rugby Team and Delta B in the qualifying stage and then overpowered Benue Buffalos after which they beat another Delta Team A in the Semi Final to book a place in the final untouched.
Team Edo however saw off the Lagos-based stubborn side, ECO II in the final.
In a final played under a heavy downpour, the Edo girls defied the rain to beat the hard-fighting Lagos side 17-0 to win the maiden Cup.
Becky Okpitiko after the final was voted player of the tournament as she was instrumental to the good run of her team to the final.
Becky Okpitiko then received a cash reward of N100,000 for emerging the Most Valuable Player and Highest Try Score in the tournament.
In the other match, Delta A defeated Team Delta B 15-5 to clinch the bronze medal.
Team Edo coach, Ntiense thanked God for the success and also the Sports Commission for their support.
The coach however hinted that more support and sponsorship from the private sector can make the team grow in wings and compete on the international level.
The tournament which took place in Asaba, Delta state, between July 15th -16th had 12 teams.
12 women teams from across the country and clubs participated in the championship.
Eastern Springbok, RFC of Anambra; Abia State Rugby FC of Abia; Coal City Angels RFC of Enugu and Heartland Pyramid Rugby team of Imo State represented the South East.
While Lagos produced three clubs, Nigeria Police Rugby Club, Ikeja, Gosar Rugby Club, Navy Barracks, Apapa and Eco II Rugby Club, Navy Barracks, Apapa.
North Central; Benue Buffalo Rugby Club Makurdi of Benue State were the representatives while Team Edo Rugby Club represented the South-South.
The North-West had Barewar Rugby Club of Kano and Zaria Rugby Club of Kaduna and Yankari Rugby Club.
The tournament was earlier slated for July 1-2 but was later rescheduled due to the national team's engagement in Mauritius.
The championship was the first championship for women since the national sports festival in Asaba last year.
