Taiwo Awoniyi in Induced Coma After Surgery for Ruptured Intestine

Posted : 14 May 2025

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in an induced coma following the initial phase of surgery for a serious abdominal injury. The 27-year-old Nigeria international sustained the injury during Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Leicester City, when he collided with the goalpost in the 88th minute while attempting to connect with a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga.

Sources confirmed that Awoniyi suffered a ruptured intestine as a result of the impact. He underwent emergency surgery on Monday night and remains hospitalized, with the second phase of the procedure scheduled for Wednesday. Nottingham Forest released a statement on Tuesday saying the player was “recovering well” and under close medical supervision.

Awoniyi, who had come on late in the match as a substitute, received extended treatment on the pitch following the collision. The assistant referee delayed raising the offside flag against Elanga, in accordance with VAR protocols that require play to continue if a potential goal-scoring chance exists. This delay has reignited criticism of the rule, with some arguing that it poses unnecessary danger to players.

Club owner Evangelos Marinakis reportedly went onto the pitch after the match to voice concern over how the incident was managed and is being kept informed of Awoniyi’s condition. In a follow-up statement, Forest emphasized that the injury highlights the inherent physical risks of football and reaffirmed their commitment to prioritizing players’ health and safety above all else.
