India’s leading men’s tennis player, Sumit Nagal, has revealed that China denied him a visa just weeks before he was due to compete in an Australian Open qualifying tournament in southwestern Sichuan. In a post on social media platform X on Tuesday, Nagal stated, “I am supposed to fly to China soon to represent India at the Australian Open Playoff. But my visa was rejected without reason.”
The 28-year-old, currently ranked world number 275, has represented India at both the Tokyo and Paris Olympics and reached a career-high ranking of 68 in 2024. Nagal previously competed in the Australian Open main draw, losing in the first round earlier this year and in the second round in 2024.
The Australian Open Asia-Pacific Wildcard Play-off is scheduled to begin on November 24. Winners of the week-long event will earn a spot in the opening Grand Slam of 2026 in Melbourne. The tournament advised players to contact the Chinese consulate regarding visa requirements and noted that they could request a letter of invitation. AFP’s requests for comment from the tournament went unanswered.
China’s foreign ministry responded to inquiries on Thursday, stating that the country “hoped the relevant individual will submit application materials according to requirements of the Chinese embassy in India.” Spokesman Lin Jian added, “China will, in accordance with rules and regulations, review and issue visas for all athletes including Indian athletes coming to compete in China.”
India and China, which share a contested Himalayan border, resumed direct flights last month after a five-year suspension caused by the pandemic and ongoing geopolitical tensions. While the two nations remain strategic rivals competing for regional influence, relations have gradually eased since a deadly border clash in 2020.
