Sri Lanka Lodges Complaint to ICC Over T20 World Cup Treatment in the United States

Posted : 07 June 2024

Sri Lanka has lodged a complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the treatment and conditions faced by their T20 World Cup team in the United States. Sri Lanka's sports minister Harin Fernando alleged that the team was subject to a seven-hour flight delay at a Florida airport and was provided accommodation more than 90 minutes away from the practice stadium upon reaching New York, contrasting with better treatment for other teams like India.

Speaking to parliament, Fernando stated, "Different countries are being treated differently. We have called for an explanation from the organisers of the tournament." He also mentioned that Sri Lanka Cricket has officially complained to the ICC about the disparity in treatment between teams participating in the T20 World Cup.

To address the situation, Sri Lanka's sports ministry has sent an officer to the United States to investigate the welfare of the team. Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa expressed unity in parliament over the dissatisfaction with the conditions, emphasizing, "We stand against this injustice, we should not allow this."

Meanwhile, former Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews described the past few days as "most challenging," citing poor practice facilities and delays, but emphasized the team's determination to overcome obstacles and perform well in their upcoming matches.
