Sport minister demands penalties for athletes who skipped the anti-homophobia campaign

Although the players' union claims it was "astonished" that its members were requested to do so, France's sports minister has suggested that Ligue 1 teams could punish players who chose not to participate in a show of support against homophobia.
Players "have to show up," according to Amelie Oudea-Castera.
However, according to the National Union of Professional Footballers, athletes shouldn't be required to deliver "collective messages."
Some Toulouse players missed Sunday's match in Nantes as a result of the problem.
According to a statement from the club, the worried players "expressed their discomfort with the linkage of their image with the rainbow colours of the LGBT movement."
The act was made in support of May 17th, the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.
Over the weekend, Ligue 1 and 2 players donned rainbow armbands, had rainbow-colored numbers on their jerseys, and posed with banners before games.
"I think it is the responsibility of the clubs to take sanctions," said Oudea-Castera.
"During such an operation, which involves all the clubs on the basic subject of non-discrimination, you have to show up."
