Spain's Women's National team faces striking players and calls for change amid Jenni Hermoso controversy
Posted : 18 September 2023
Jenni Hermoso, who won the Women's World Cup with Spain, has not been included in the country's national squad since the tournament victory.
A significant number of players boycotted the team after Luis Rubiales, the former football federation boss, kissed Hermoso after the final, which led to Rubiales resigning.
On Friday, 39 players, including 21 of the 23 World Cup-winners, announced that their strike would continue until further changes were made.
The new coach, Montse Tome, announced her first squad, replacing Jorge Vilda, who was considered a close ally of Rubiales. Tome is the first woman to hold the position of Spain's women's national team coach.
It remains uncertain whether the players who were called up have ended their strike, and Tome did not disclose the details of her conversations with them.
The Spanish football federation urged the striking players to return to the national team, while expressing support for Jenni Hermoso. Spain is scheduled to play Nations League fixtures against Sweden and Switzerland.
Barcelona's Mapi Leon and Patri Guijarro, who were not part of Spain's World Cup squad due to their open letter against then-coach Vilda, have been named in Tome's squad.
The players boycotting the national team released a statement on Friday, stating that they would not return until further conditions were met, including changes within the football federation.
The Spanish government also assured the players that changes would be made and that there would be greater representation of women in the federation.
Rubiales, who was banned from going within 200 meters of Hermoso, has denied sexually assaulting her, with the case currently in court.
