Spain v England: Jorge Vilda’s Women's World Cup team faces tensions over training methods, 15 withdraw
Posted : 18 August 2023
Spain's head coach, Jorge Vilda, stands on the brink of guiding his team to victory in the Women's World Cup final against England, despite facing significant turmoil within the team less than a year ago. Surviving a player revolt following a quarter-final defeat at Euro 2022, Vilda's leadership was called into question when 15 players submitted emails expressing concerns about their "emotional state" and "health" under his coaching.
Known as "Las 15," the players denied seeking Vilda's dismissal, yet tensions persisted due to alleged training method and preparation issues. Vilda received support from the Spanish football federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales, and the players involved were excluded from the squad, rather than the coach.
The situation continued to impact the team's dynamic, evident by Vilda's absence during on-pitch celebrations following knockout stage victories. Despite this, Vilda's coaching staff stood by him, and he expressed gratitude for the RFEF's backing.
While Spain's team excelled on the field, progressing through the tournament with impressive victories, Veronica Boquete, a former Spain captain, noted that the dispute led some Spanish fans to have mixed sentiments about the team's success. Boquete pointed out that while the players deserved credit, they faced a challenging environment due to the internal conflict.
Spain's World Cup journey saw early convincing wins against Costa Rica and Zambia, followed by a heavy defeat against Japan. However, the team bounced back with a resounding victory over Switzerland and successive wins against the Netherlands and Sweden in the quarter-final and semi-final, respectively.
Boquete emphasized that while Spain's success was commendable, there were lingering questions about Vilda's influence on tactical decisions and player performances. Despite the challenges, Spain's progress to the final underscores the team's resilience and determination to succeed despite internal turmoil.
