Spain and England's U21 Championship final sparks altercations, with Rubiales and Gomez criticizing England's behavior

Posted : 09 July 2023
The European U21 Championship final between Spain and England was marred by several altercations involving both teams. Spain FA president Luis Rubiales and under-21 international Sergio Gomez criticized England's behavior during the match.

England emerged as winners, defeating Spain 1-0 to claim the trophy after 39 years. Cole Palmer's free-kick, which took a deflection off Curtis Jones, proved to be the decisive goal in a heated match. Palmer's celebration in front of the Spain bench sparked a scuffle between the squads, leading to red cards for Spain fitness coach Carlos Rivera and England assistant coach Ashley Cole.

More altercations occurred as the teams headed to their changing rooms at half-time and again at the full-time whistle. The match ended with England goalkeeper James Trafford saving Abel Ruiz's last-minute penalty, resulting in red cards for Morgan Gibbs-White of England and Antonio Blanco of Spain during stoppage time.

Gomez expressed surprise at Palmer's actions and stated that he and his teammates would have celebrated differently. He also mentioned that England's attitude was not a one-time occurrence and highlighted the respect they have for their rivals.

Palmer admitted that his celebration may have been excessive but expressed his happiness for the victory. Meanwhile, Spanish FA president Rubiales criticized England's behavior, highlighting the importance of not engaging in unnecessary provocations and emphasizing the values of respect and sportsmanship taught by the Spanish FA.

The final match of the European U21 Championship was overshadowed by the confrontations and controversies that unfolded on the pitch.
