Sources: Romelu Lukaku speaks with the new Chelsea manager about his future
Posted : 12 May 2023
Romelu Lukaku will meet with Chelsea's new manager to discuss his future after the latest season, according to reports.
Inter Milan, where Lukaku has spent the whole season on loan, has no intention of pursuing a long-term contract.
Lukaku was brought back to the San Siro by Inter last summer for an initial loan cost of €8 million, and reports claim that the contract does not include an option or an obligation for a permanent move.
According to reports, Lukaku is eager to continue in Italy, but a new loan or transfer would need to be arranged. Before making any such move, the striker is anticipated to return to Stamford Bridge to talk about his future with the next manager, who is still generally believed to be Mauricio Pochettino.
Lukaku joined Chelsea from Inter almost two years ago for €115 million, and his deal runs through 2026.
Whether Pochettino would want to keep Lukaku or try to move him in order to cut a roster that currently has 31 first-team players before those on loan return to London is unknown at this time.
Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital completed their acquisition of the club this summer, Chelsea has spent almost £600m on signings, putting the club under some financial pressure to produce income through player departures.
Despite offering an apology to Chelsea fans in January 2022 for criticising the team and former manager Thomas Tuchel in an unofficial interview with Sky Italia, Lukaku's relationship with Chelsea supporters is also strained.
In 30 appearances this season, he has scored 10 goals for Inter, who are vying for a position in the Champions League final after defeating city rivals AC Milan in the first leg of their semifinal.
