SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament Set to Tip Off as Postseason Race Intensifies

The 2026 SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament is set to begin on Tuesday, ushering in the final and most dramatic phase before the NBA playoffs. With eight teams—four from each conference—still fighting for postseason survival, the competition promises high-intensity, win-or-go-home basketball over four decisive days.

The play-in format features teams ranked seventh through tenth in each conference battling for the final two playoff spots. The seventh and eighth seeds face off, with the winner securing an automatic playoff berth as the No. 7 seed. Meanwhile, the ninth and tenth seeds meet in an elimination game, where the loser’s season ends immediately. The remaining teams then compete for the eighth seed, completing the playoff bracket.

In the Eastern Conference, matchups include the Philadelphia 76ers against the Orlando Magic in the 7–8 clash, while the Miami Heat take on the Charlotte Hornets in a must-win 9–10 encounter. Over in the Western Conference, the Phoenix Suns face the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Golden State Warriors meet the Los Angeles Clippers in another elimination showdown.

The stakes are immense, as only four teams will emerge from the play-in to join the already-qualified top six seeds in each conference. Those successful sides will then advance to face top-ranked opponents such as the Detroit Pistons in the East and the Oklahoma City Thunder in the West when the playoffs begin later this week.

The tournament runs from April 14 to April 17, immediately following the conclusion of the regular season, with the NBA playoffs scheduled to start on April 18. All six play-in games will be broadcast exclusively on Prime Video, marking a significant shift in how fans access postseason basketball.

As teams gear up for the opening tip-off, the SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament once again delivers a unique blend of urgency and opportunity—where a single game can define a season, and underdogs have a final chance to fight their way into the championship chase.
