Ronaldo considers owning a football club after retirement

Posted : 09 June 2023
Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his openness to the idea of owning a football club once he retires from playing professionally, which he expects to be in "two to three years maximum."

Although he is currently under contract with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr until June 2025, Ronaldo is already making plans for his future beyond playing.

During an event in Madrid for his new bottled water business venture, the 38-year-old Portugal international told reporters, "I don't rule out becoming a club owner. It's something I thought about a few years back. I probably would like to own a [football] club. I'm at the end of my career, two to three years maximum."

In addition to discussing his potential ownership aspirations, Ronaldo also celebrated the decision of his former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema to join the Saudi Pro League. Benzema, 35, terminated his one-year contract extension with Madrid and opted to sign with Saudi champions Al Ittihad.

Ronaldo acknowledged that his move to Saudi Arabia has had a positive impact, stating, "I knew that by me going to [Saudi] Arabia I would open the box. Karim [Benzema] has gone there, but I'm sure many others will follow. In two or three years, the Saudi Pro League will be one of the most important in the world. May all the stars come to Arabia; there are no problems with the league. What we want is competition."

While several players, including Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, N'Golo Kante, Angel Di Maria, Iago Aspas, and Roberto Firmino, have reportedly been linked with moves to clubs in the Saudi Pro League, Lionel Messi has turned down a lucrative offer from Saudi team Al Hilal. Messi confirmed his intention to join Major League Soccer side Inter Miami CF as a free agent after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires on June 30.
