Following Roma's loss to Sevilla in the Europa League final on May 31, head coach Jose Mourinho has been handed a four-game ban for his verbal abuse of the referee, Anthony Taylor, as confirmed by UEFA.
In footage that circulated after the match, Mourinho was seen approaching Taylor in the stadium garage in Budapest, Hungary, where he referred to the referee as a "disgrace" using an expletive.
The defeat in the final, which ended in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw, marked Roma's last opportunity to secure qualification for the next season's Champions League.
Mourinho's ban will be applicable during the group stage of the upcoming Europa League season, as UEFA found him guilty of "directing abusive language at a match official." The ban imposed on Mourinho is twice the minimum requirement set by UEFA's disciplinary regulations.
Following the final, Taylor and his family faced harassment from Roma fans at Budapest airport. Additionally, UEFA fined Roma €50,000 (approximately $55,000) and imposed a ticket sales ban for the club's next away game in the Europa League.
The charges against Roma included incidents of "lighting of fireworks, throwing of objects, acts of damage, and crowd disturbances," as stated by UEFA. Furthermore, Roma is required to establish communication with the Hungarian football federation to address the damages caused by its fans at Puskas Arena.
