Real Madrid held to goalless draw by Rayo Vallecano, Ancelotti remains calm

Posted : 06 November 2023
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti downplayed the disappointment of his team's 0-0 draw in the derby against Rayo Vallecano, emphasizing that there was "no drama" despite dropping two points in the LaLiga title race following their recent Clasico triumph. Despite creating numerous opportunities and pushing Rayo back throughout the match at the Santiago Bernabeu, Los Blancos couldn't find the late winner they often produce.

The draw leaves Real Madrid in second place, two points behind surprise leaders Girona, who came from behind to beat Osasuna, and two points ahead of Barcelona following the Catalans' fortunate win over Real Sociedad on Saturday. Ancelotti reassured reporters, stating, "In the table we are doing very well, we're in the fight, we're doing very well in the Champions League – there is no drama."

Ancelotti believed the result was not a fair reflection of his team's performance, asserting, "We're hurt by the result, not the performance, clearly it was a game we deserved to win. We tried in every way, and it didn't come off, we tried until the last second."

The Italian tactician made strategic lineup changes, including having Eduardo Camavinga replace the injured holding midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni and starting Luka Modric in place of Toni Kroos. Real Madrid dominated from the start, with Rayo Vallecano's goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski making key saves, including denying Fede Valverde's early breakthrough attempt.

While the game featured moments of frustration and near misses, it ultimately ended in a goalless draw, with the late stages marked by contentious incidents, including Antonio Rudiger and Florian Lejeune being booked after a confrontation. Ancelotti's prediction of Brazilian wingers Vinicius and Rodrygo outscoring Bellingham and Joselu didn't materialize during the match.

Rayo Vallecano, who remained unbeaten in eight league games, delivered a solid performance, earning their sixth clean sheet of the season, and striker Raul de Tomas described it as a "really complete game" from their team.
