Rangers Dismiss Moses Simon’s Allegation of Ethnic Discrimination

Posted : 12 July 2026

The management of Rangers International FC has refuted claims by Nigerian international Moses Simon that he was once denied an opportunity to join the club because of his ethnic background.

In a statement issued on Friday in Enugu, the club's General Manager, Mr. Amobi Ezeaku, said Rangers has never operated a policy that discriminates against players based on ethnicity, religion, tribe, or place of origin.

Simon recently alleged that he was overlooked by the club's technical crew during a recruitment exercise because he is from northern Nigeria.

Responding to the allegation, Ezeaku said Rangers respects every player's right to share personal experiences but maintained that the club's recruitment process has always been based on merit.

"While we respect every player's right to recount his personal journey, it is important to state clearly that Rangers International does not maintain any policy of discrimination based on ethnicity, tribe, religion, or place of birth," he said.

Ezeaku noted that since its establishment in 1970, Rangers has grown into a national football institution despite being based in Enugu in Nigeria's South-East.

According to him, the club's recruitment philosophy has consistently prioritised football ability, discipline, character, and commitment over ethnic or regional considerations.

He added that Rangers has, over the years, provided opportunities for players, coaches, and officials from virtually every part of Nigeria, as well as from other countries.

Ezeaku explained that although thousands of players have participated in the club's recruitment exercises, not everyone secured a contract, stressing that selection decisions are based on football, technical, and administrative considerations.

"It would therefore be inaccurate to characterise Rangers as an institution that discriminates against players because of their ethnicity," he stated.

The Rangers General Manager reaffirmed the club's commitment to providing equal opportunities for talented players from across Nigeria and around the world who possess the quality and character to represent the seven-time Nigeria Premier Football League champions.
