Raheem Sterling to Appear in Court Over Dangerous Driving Charges

Former England international Raheem Sterling is due to appear in court next month after being charged with dangerous driving, possessing nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation and failing to provide a specimen.

The 31-year-old was involved in a single-vehicle crash on the M3 in Hampshire on 28 May 2026. Sterling’s Lamborghini collided with motorway barriers near the Minley Interchange while travelling southbound. No other vehicles were involved, and nobody was injured.

Sterling was arrested following the incident and later released on bail while police continued their investigation. He is scheduled to appear before Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on 15 September.

Police had initially suspected Sterling of driving while unfit through drugs, although that allegation does not form part of the charges he is now facing. A source close to the player previously told BBC Sport that there was no evidence of drugs in his system.

The same source said Sterling had endured a particularly difficult period in his career and had been left feeling “worthless” and “forgotten about” during the previous couple of years.

Sterling is currently without a club after his short spell with Feyenoord came to an end. He joined the Dutch side in February on a temporary contract after departing Chelsea by mutual agreement.

Chelsea signed Sterling from Manchester City for £47.5 million in 2022. During his seven years at City, he won four Premier League titles, five League Cups and the FA Cup.

After returning to Chelsea from a loan spell at Arsenal in 2025, Sterling was removed from the club's first-team setup and trained separately from the senior squad.

At international level, Sterling won 82 caps for England between 2012 and 2022. He represented the Three Lions at three World Cups and two European Championships.
