QPR's Ilias Shaer sentenced to prison for assault, continues playing amid ongoing legal issues

Posted : 24 February 2024

Queens Park Rangers and Moroccan footballer Ilias Shaer has been sentenced to one year in prison, with the first year suspended, after being found guilty of breaking the skull of a truck driver during a fight in Basil, France, in the summer of 2020. The altercation occurred while Shaer, along with his brother and friends, was waiting for a bus back to Belgium.

The victim, a truck driver named Niels T, suffered a severe two-centimeter-long skull fracture and had to undergo a lengthy recovery, preventing him from working for an extended period. The court in Antwerp also imposed a £13,400 restitution payment on Shaer and handed his brother a suspended six-month prison sentence and a £700 fine.

Despite the legal proceedings, Ilias Shaer, who has been a prominent player for QPR and the Moroccan national team, continues to play in England. The incident took place during a kayaking trip four years ago, and the legal process is ongoing. QPR released a statement stating they would not comment further as the legal process had not concluded. Shaer, 26, has been a key player for QPR in the English Premier League since his debut in 2017, making 222 appearances and participating in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with the Moroccan national team.

Testimonies in court revealed that the altercation began when a woman in a bikini demanded to be the first to board the bus, leading to aggressive behavior and a physical confrontation with other people waiting, including the victims.

The prosecutor described the woman's actions as aggressive, stating that the situation quickly escalated, resulting in a fight that led to Niels T losing consciousness after being struck with a rock, allegedly by Ilias Shaer. Shaer denied being the one who used the rock and requested a retrial with a different lawyer, but the request was denied.
