PSG's Marquinhos to remain sidelined until international break due to injury

Posted : 12 March 2024

Paris Saint-Germain's captain, Marquinhos, will prolong his absence from the field until the upcoming international break, as confirmed by the French champions on Tuesday. This ruling sidelines the Brazilian defender for both Wednesday's French Cup quarterfinal clash against Nice and Sunday's Ligue 1 encounter against Montpellier. According to a medical statement released by the club, Marquinhos is expected to remain unavailable until the commencement of the international break next week.

The injury setback for Marquinhos dates back to February 17 when he sustained a calf injury during a match against Nantes, subsequently forcing him to miss the Champions League last 16 second leg against Real Sociedad. While PSG's medical staff assures that the injury isn't severe, precautionary measures have been taken to ensure the defender's full recovery. PSG coach Luis Enrique echoed this sentiment in a press conference, stating that although Marquinhos could have potentially played against Real Sociedad, the decision to withhold him from action was made to avoid any unnecessary risks.

In contrast, the club is optimistic about the progress of Marco Asensio, who continues his rehabilitation from a right hamstring injury. Asensio is slated to feature in the upcoming match against Nice, alongside defenders Presnel Kimpembe and Milan Skriniar. Their return will bolster PSG's defensive lineup, providing reinforcements as they navigate through a crucial phase of the season across domestic and continental competitions.
