Postecoglou criticizes VAR in chaotic Tottenham defeat to Chelsea

Posted : 07 November 2023
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou expressed his disdain for VAR following his team's "out of control" 4-1 defeat to Chelsea. The match was marked by VAR interventions, with Tottenham having Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie sent off and two goals disallowed. Nicolas Jackson's late hat-trick secured the win for Chelsea after Dejan Kulusevski's early goal was canceled out by Cole Palmer's penalty. Postecoglou was frustrated by the time-consuming nature of VAR decisions and expressed his preference for referees and linesmen making critical decisions instead of remote VAR officials.

Postecoglou felt like he spent too much time waiting for VAR interventions, and he voiced his displeasure with the system. He believed that constant VAR scrutiny erodes the authority of on-field referees and expressed a preference for the traditional approach of accepting the referee's decisions. While he acknowledged that he might be in the minority with his viewpoint, he stood firm in his belief that the referee and linesmen should have the final say on the pitch.

In contrast, Chelsea's manager, Mauricio Pochettino, had no complaints about VAR and focused on the victory over his former club. He emphasized the importance of technology in the game, acknowledging that many things happen on the pitch that need verification. Pochettino highlighted the significance of the win and downplayed the emotional aspect of facing his old team, considering it just another important match.

Pochettino acknowledged the challenges he has faced at Chelsea and saw this win as a morale boost for his injury-hit team. He praised his team's performance and emphasized the need to build momentum. Additionally, he commended Nicolas Jackson for his hat-trick and hoped it would boost the player's confidence.

The match was marred by VAR controversy and differing opinions on its role in the game, with Postecoglou frustrated by the system and Pochettino more accepting of its place in modern football.
