Players for the Women's National Team Requests Equal World Cup Compensation

Posted : 10 April 2023
A letter demanding equal World Cup prize money was delivered to FIFA, according to the international professional soccer players' organization, and was signed by 150
members of the women's national team.

A month before the start of the men's World Cup in Qatar, FIFPro revealed that the letter, which also demands equal treatment and circumstances for women's teams competing in soccer's most famous tournament, was sent to the sport's international governing body in October.

"We can confirm a letter signed by 150 players from national teams on every continent was sent to FIFA in October. These players are seeking equitable conditions before the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. FIFPRO is currently negotiating with FIFA on behalf of these players," FIFPro stated in a statement.
This summer, Australia and New Zealand will host the Women's World Cup.

Due to continuing talks, FIFPro stated that it was unable to make any other comments. Additionally, the letter's signers' names were kept a secret.
The action coincides with growing calls for FIFA to increase parity between the prize money for the two competitions.

Out of a $440 million prize fund, Argentina took home $42 million for winning the men's World Cup in Qatar. On the other hand, the US women's national team took home $4 million of the $30 million in prizes awarded for the 2019 Women's World Cup in France. This summer's women's competition does not yet have a prize fund in place.

The field for the Women's World Cup has been increased to 32 teams, up from 24 in France, and play begins on July 20. More than 1 billion people watched the 2019 event on television worldwide.
