Paul Pogba's failed drug test confirmed: Juventus midfielder faces suspension

Posted : 06 October 2023

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba's failed drugs test has been confirmed, with his B sample testing positive. The 30-year-old was provisionally suspended after his initial sample showed elevated levels of testosterone following a random test conducted after Juve's 3-0 win at Udinese on August 20. He had been an unused substitute in that match. If found guilty of doping, Pogba could face a ban ranging from two to four years.

The anti-doping agency Nado Italia had previously stated that Pogba violated anti-doping rules due to the presence of "non-endogenous testosterone metabolites" in his system, indicating an external source of the prohibited substance. Testosterone is a hormone known for its potential to enhance athletes' endurance.

Pogba's agent, Rafaela Pimenta, emphasized that Pogba had never intended to break any rules. Juventus had re-signed Pogba on a four-year deal in July 2022, following his departure from Manchester United as a free agent. However, his return to Turin has been marred by persistent injury issues, which also caused him to miss the previous year's World Cup in Qatar.

During the current season, Pogba has only played 51 minutes as a substitute in games against Bologna and Empoli. In the previous season, he managed just 162 minutes of playing time across various competitions and did not score any goals. Recently, Pogba faced another injury setback, as Juventus coach Massimo Allegri revealed that he suffered a minor back problem after his appearance against Empoli.
