Paul Pogba faces provisional suspension after testing positive for banned substance
Posted : 12 September 2023
Paul Pogba, the Juventus midfielder, is facing a provisional suspension after testing positive for a banned substance following the club's season opener, according to a statement from the Serie A club. Italy's anti-doping tribunal Nado disclosed that the 30-year-old had a positive test for testosterone after Juventus' 3-0 victory over Udinese on the first day of the season. Although Pogba did not participate in the match, he was selected for random testing afterward.
In response, Juventus issued a statement, saying, "Juventus Football Club announces that today, the footballer Paul Labile Pogba received a precautionary suspension order from the National Anti-Doping Tribunal following the results of tests carried out on August 20, 2023. The club reserves the right to consider the next procedural steps."
Nado has stated that Pogba's provisional suspension takes effect immediately, and he could potentially face a suspension of up to four years. Pogba has made just two substitute appearances for Juventus this season, as his return to the club has been marked by injuries and off-field issues. He only played six times in Serie A last season.
Pogba rejoined Juventus in July 2022 after leaving Manchester United as a free agent. Alongside his injury struggles, Pogba had reportedly been the target of an £11.3 million blackmail plot involving his brother Mathias and childhood friends. In an interview with Al Jazeera released before news of the provisional ban, Pogba revealed that the incident had made him contemplate stepping away from football due to the impact of money on relationships and personal well-being. He also expressed his determination to prove his critics wrong and emphasized his resilience in the face of adversity.
