NPFL Prematch Day 17: Bayelsa United, Rivers United fight for bragging right
Posted : 07 May 2023
On Sunday, May 7, at 4 p.m., the beautiful Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt will be lit up as it welcomes the defending champions of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and Federation Cup defending champions Bayelsa United for the Match Day 17 encounter.
Surely, bragging rights will be at stake as neighbors Bayelsa United and Rivers United do battle at the Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on Matchday 17 of the Abridged Group B fixtures.
Bayelsa United come into the game on the back of a late 2-1 win against Sunshine Stars, which has almost secured the team a place in the Nigeria Premier League season with six points above the relegation zone and two matches to go.
It's been an impressive second round of the abridged league for the Prosperity Boys, who have secured four victories at home and a vital away win against relegation-threatened Wikki Tourist of Bauchi.
Bayelsa United will certainly come into this game beaming with confidence and knowing that a point will mathematically confirm their safety. Since the start of the second round of the season, Bayelsa United have certainly played better and conceded fewer goals, with mid-season signings Alex Jerry and Sheriff adding depth to the squared.
The likes of Alex Oyawah, Stephen Wisdom, and Edwin Ayiba have also been on the score sheet of late, not to mention second-top goal scorer Mizo Robert, who has scored nine goals so far this season.
It's an important game for Bayelsa United, and the players must make sure they have a winning mentality going into this match, knowing fully well that a point will mathematically see them avoid the drop.
Rivers United come into this game on the back of their continental ouster to Young Africans of Tanzania over two legs, and having lost on penalties to Enyimba in the rescheduled Federation Cup, they will be hoping to get back to winning ways in the league.
The Pride of Rivers are currently fourth on the log in group B and still have a chance of making it to the season-ending title decider, "The Super Six."
The defending champions will hope that the likes of Malachi Ohawumi, Christian Madu, Victor Sochima, and Eyima Nwagua can lead them to victory against their neighbors and rivals. Bayelsa United vs. Rivers United is always a game to look out for as both teams always fight to claim the bragging rights whenever they play each other, and this promises to be a very entertaining encounter.
