North Korean club Naegohyang is set for a rare trip to South Korea later this month, marking a significant moment in sporting exchanges between the two nations. The team will travel across the border to face Suwon in the semi-final of the Asian Women’s Champions League on 20 May.
North Korea has submitted a delegation list of 27 players and 12 staff members for the visit, which has been officially confirmed by South Korea’s Unification Ministry. It will be the first time athletes from North Korea have entered South Korea since 2018, when a unified ice hockey team was formed for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
The visit comes at a time when South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has expressed interest in improving strained relations with North Korea. However, political ties between the two countries remain tense, with Pyongyang previously describing South Korea as its “most hostile state” and rejecting reunification talks.
Naegohyang are competing in the tournament for the first time and advanced to the semi-finals after a 3-0 victory over Ho Chi Minh City. The winner of the semi-final will face either Melbourne City or Tokyo Verdy in the final, which will also be staged in Suwon on 23 May.
