Akinkunmi Amoo, a former Nigerian youth winger who participated in the 2019 U-17 World Cup in Brazil, has been sentenced to one year in prison for sexual assault in Denmark.
The 21-year-old received the verdict on Friday after being charged with sexually assaulting two women.
He plans to challenge the decision made by the Danish court, as stated by Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana.
During the trial, Amoo faced allegations of indecent assault, attempted rape, and rape in a non-intercourse sexual relationship.
Testimonies from three women were presented, detailing their encounters with the footballer.
The prosecution sought a 21-month prison term along with deportation, but ultimately Amoo was sentenced to one year in prison.
Consequently, he will be deported from Denmark and face a six-year entry ban.
Moreover, he is required to bear the expenses of the legal proceedings.
Despite the outcome, Amoo has decided to appeal the decision in the High Court.
However, Amoo has provided a different perspective on the matter.
According to his testimony, one of the women who accused him of misconduct, along with a male acquaintance who were both supporters of the club he represented, attempted to extort a substantial amount of money from him, alleging rape.
Amoo's defense attorney reiterated this claim in court.
Throughout the trial, Amoo consistently pleaded not guilty to all charges, including indecent assault, attempted rape, and rape in a non-intercourse sexual relationship, maintaining his innocence.
